ethics and graphics
Image manipulation is nothing new. Even before the digital age, photos were manipulated by cutting together the negatives of photos before printing. This practice started almost immediately after the technology was created in the mid-19th century, as seen by photos of Abraham Lincoln's head on John Calhoun's body. You can view a collection of manipulated photos throughout history here. Now, in the age of the internet, photo manipulation has been made incredibly easier through the creation of photoshop. Above is a video showing the process of editing a photo of an elderly lady to make her appear much younger. Practices such as these are becoming extremely commonplace, and have begun to take over the beauty industry. All photos in magazines, and many posted online (including on celebrity's social media accounts), have been "touched up." Editing photos for mass publication distorts society's views of beauty, which leads to problems with young girls perceptions of perfection and beauty throughout their adolescent development.
